On Saturday evening last the seniors took on Mostrim in the Div 1 relegation playoff. Slashers got off to a great start, getting the scoreboard ticking while defending well and keeping Mostrim out. At half time the score was 1-06 to 0-02. The second half saw Mostrim come back into it, but a good determined display was enough to see out the game with a win, and a positive note to finish the season. Final score 1-12 to 0-10.
On Sunday, our Juniors lined out in Pearse Park for their Junior A county final against parish rivals Grattans. This side have been underdogs all year, and were hoping to spring another surprise. This ended up being a hugely exciting encounter, a game that Jim Gavin and the football review committee would have been impressed with - attacking football, end to end and for almost the entire game, the outcome was in the balance. Our lads put in a huge first half performance, putting Grattans on the back foot. The towering duo of Ryan McGoey and Cole O'Connor in the full forward line created a couple of big chances, but the Grattans keeper was in fine form and made a number of big saves. Diarmuid Sheahan also saw a shot on goal clip the crossbar. Having kept our noses ahead for much of the first half, Grattans managed to get the momentum for the last five minutes of the half and picked off a couple of quick points to go into the dressing room at half time with a 0-6 to 0-5 lead.
Slashers started the second half well, but five minutes in Grattans got a goal from a penalty and that was the first time there was some separation between the sides. In a determined response, Slashers brought it back to a one point game within five minutes. But as Grattans began to pack their defence and play on the counterattack Slashers found it more difficult to pick up scores. With five minutes to go, Grattans had a two point lead and despite our best efforts we couldn't eat into that lead. As the game entered injury time Slashers piled forward looking for a goal. However it wasn't to be our day and with almost the last play of the game, Grattans got a turnover and broke forward to finish to the net. Final score 2-09 to 0-10.
Despite the result, this young side and their management team of Derek Swaris and Niall Caslin were a credit to the club and hopefully will build on this season.
