Seán Donnelly ar shlí na fírinne
Flipeadóirí Longfoirt was sad to say our final farewell to club stalwart Seán Donnelly over the weekend. Seán proudly wore the sky-blue colours of Slashers for many years and contributed to our club in management and administration in later years. His achievements for Club and County put him among the greats of Longford football.

Flipeadóirí Longfoirt extend sincere sympathy to his wife Ann, daughters Orfhlaith, Aideen, Dervilla and Patricia, grandchildren Anna Lily, Conor and Ella, sons-in-law Ciarán O’Neill and Declan Fox, sister Phyllis Meally, relatives and friends.

RIP Seán Donnelly. From his debut in Blue & Gold in a challenge match against Monaghan in Ballybay on 8th February 1959, his playing career with Longford spanned 14 years until retirement in 1973, while his club career continued into the early 1980's. His achievements for Club (Longford Slashers) and County put him among the greats of Longford football.

Seán played in four Sigerson Cup finals with UCG, winning it three times. He was selected for the Combined Universities team on three occasions. In addition to winning the National League in 1966, he scored 2-1 in the Leinster SFC final victory over Laois in 1968 and played for Leinster in the Railway Cup final that year. He captained Longford to win NFL Division 2 in 1972 and was nominated for an All-Star (alongside Jimmy Hannify) in 1972. He won three Senior club titles for three different clubs in the same year in 1961 (Longford SFC with Longford Slashers, London SFC with St. Vincent's in Cricklewood, and Galway SFL with UCG).

Off the pitch, Seán served as County Board Secretary from 1968 to 1977, managed the Longford Senior team for a year from Oct 1975 and coached Longford Slashers to SFC title in 1975 and JFC title in 1982 as a player on both. Seán was selected on the Longford 'Team of Millennium' and was in top 10 of the Irish Independent poll of Top 20 Longford footballers of last 50 years, polled in May 2020. A longford legend!

As per previous notes, we have been busy launching our new app, with provider Clubzap. We would urge everybody associated with the club to download the app and also to register your membership for 2024.

The app provides us with a new platform to connect to club members and a single central location for club news, fixtures, results, team communications, club shop along with payments of membership and fundraising. It will also be used to gain entry to newly refurbished gym. We would urge all members to download and use.

Club Social
The much anticipated Longford Slashers Social night is taking place on Saturday 27th January, from 7.15pm in the Longford Arms. This event will be an opportunity to get together as a club and celebrate our successes of 2023 while looking forward to the year ahead. We hope to see as many as possible join us on what promises to be a great night! This is an over 18s event, and caters for all sections of the club. Minor club parents are welcome.

There will be a four course meal included at 8pm sharp, neat dress essential. Please provide any dietary requirements in advance. Music will be provided by Audiopilot, followed by DJ.
